　poorは「貧しい」という形容詞。語源はラテン語のpauper（英語では「貧しい人」という名詞）で、転じて、「乏しい」「不十分な」から「哀れな」「かわいそうな」まで広い意味で使う。judgmentは「判断」。poor judgmentは、思慮を欠いた「浅はかな判断」と訳される。カタカナ読みは「プア・ジャジメント」。
　オバマ大統領は2010年6月23日、アフガニスタンに駐留する米軍のトップ、マクリスタル司令官を解任した。音楽・政治雑誌“Rolling Stone”（電子版6月22日付）に掲載された“The Runaway General”（逃亡将軍）というインタビュー記事で、同司令官が側近らと共にアフガニスタン戦争の内情を暴露し、オバマ政権を痛烈に批判したためだ。
　「ポリティコ」（同日付）の“Obama: Gen.  Showed ‘Poor Judgment’”（オバマ大統領、「司令官は〝浅はかな判断〟をした」）の記事によると、マクリスタル氏はすぐに“It was a mistake reflecting poor judgment and should never have happened.”（それは浅はかな判断による誤りで、起すべきではなかった）と謝罪したが、〝後の祭り〟。オバマ大統領は翌日、ホワイトハウスに司令官を召喚、“The conduct represented in the recently published article does not meet the standard that should be set by a commanding general.”(最近出た記事に表れた行為は、司令官としてあるまじきことだ)と解任の理由を示した上で、ペトレイアス元イラク駐留米軍司令官を後任に充てる人事を発表した。
　マクリスタル氏解任の背景として、アフガニスタン戦争が泥沼化の様相を呈しており、2010年11月の中間選挙を控えて誰かが責任を取らなければ収まりがつかないことが挙げられた。だが、ワシントン・ポスト（６月24日付）は、“McChrystal’ s Lack of Political Skills Led to Downfall”（マクリスタル氏の政治的手腕の欠如が失脚につながった）との記事を掲載し、“At times the general’ s openness, especially with the news media, got him in trouble.”（将軍の、とくにニュース・メディアに対する開けっぴろげなところが、時としてトラブルを招くことがあった）と指摘した。
　“I am sorry for my poor judgment.”（浅はかな判断を悔いています）というのは、ちょっとした過失について謝罪する言い方である。意図的で、重大な結果を招いた場合は、“To call it a lapse of judgment is beyond an understatement.”（それを判断の誤りと呼ぶのは、わざと控えめに言い過ぎだ）などと非難されるから、使い方には要注意。
　ところで、poor judgmentの反対はgood judgment（すぐれた判断）だが、“Good judgment comes from experience, and experience ― well, that comes from poor judgment.”（すぐれた判断は経験から生まれる。そして、経験は、浅はかな判断から生まれる）という諺もあるのだ。The Sankei Shimbun （July 10 2010)

In an interview with Vanity Fair magazine he remarked how he found being photographed “just weird” and added: “You just feel like you're being raped somehow. Raped. The whole thing.”
He later acknowledged his poor judgement after being criticised by the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), a US organisation which works with sexual assault victims.
In a statement he apologised for “a poor choice of words on my part, in an effort to explain a feeling”.
He said he was “truly sorry for offending anyone in any way - I never meant to". “I understand there is no comparison and I am very regretful.”
“In an effort to correct my lack of judgement, please accept my heartfelt apology,” the actor added.
