cutは「切る」という動詞。cornerは「角」。cut a cornerは、角を曲がらずに横切るので、「近道をする」という慣用表現。これが複数形のcornersになり、「何度も近道する」（take shortcuts）となると、「そんなに手抜きして大丈夫か」といいたくなる。転じて、「手を抜く」「切り詰める」ことを意味する。カタカナ読みは「カット・コーナーズ」。
AP通信（2010年６月15日付）は、メキシコ湾の原油流出事故の原因に関連して、“Documents: BP Cut Corners in Days before Blowout”（文書では、英BPは爆発事故前の数日間に〝手抜き〟をしていた）と報じた。この文書は、米下院エネルギー商業委員会に提出された事故原因を裏付ける内部文書（internal documents）。それによると、“BP acted to cut costs in the weeks before the catastrophic blowout in the Gulf of Mexico as it dealt with one problem after another on the doomed rig.”（メキシコ湾の壊滅的な爆発事故の前の数週間に、破滅をもたらした油井の掘削施設に次から次へと問題が起こったが、BPはコスト削減に動いた）という。
たとえば、海底にある油井を固めるためのセメント工事を請け負った会社が、油井に通す鋼管を正確に中央に設置するため、“centralizer”（センターリング装置）を21機使うように推奨したが、BPはこれを拒否して６機しか使わなかったという。その結果、セメント工事が不良に終わった可能性が指摘されている。
ほかにも、cut costs（経費削減）のためにcut corners（さまざまな手抜きが行われた）とされ、内部文書には、BPの技術者が事故の６日前に、この油井について“nightmare well”（悪夢の油井）と批判した電子メールまで含まれているのだ。
BPは、手抜きによって数百万ドルの経費を節約しようとしたが、事故を起こしたことで、被害補償のために少なくとも200億㌦の拠出をオバマ政権に約束するはめになった。“Penny wise and pound foolish.”（一文惜しみの百失い）ということわざがピンと来るが、破壊された地球環境を考えると、“Millions wise and trillions foolish.”（数百万㌦を惜しんで数兆㌦の損害）と糾弾したくなるのは、米国民だけではないだろう。
ところで、景気回復に縁のない庶民としては、家計を切り詰める以外にない。そこで、最近アメリカで広まる“How to Cut Corners Effectively”（効果的に切り詰める方法）。“No smoking and no drinking.”（タバコと酒をやらない）は言わずもがなで、健康を増進させ、一挙両得。“Bring your lunch to work.”（職場に弁当を持っていこう）は、外食より安くつき、目に見えてカネが節約できる。さらに、“Do your grocery shopping late in the evening.”（食料品の買出しは夕方遅くにしよう）。つまり、スーパーで閉店前の見切り品を安く買う―など。家計の防衛対策に国境はない。The Sankei Shimbun （July 5 2010)

Con-Dems 'cutting corners over nuclear plants'

Coalition ministers were accused of jumping the gun today by pushing through a new generation of nuclear power stations without learning the lessons of the Japanese Fukushima disaster.Nuclear chief inspector Dr Mike Weightman is expected to deliver his final report into the implications of the disaster for the British nuclear industry this week.

But Greenpeace believes that the probe has been carried out too quickly to learn the lessons from the ongoing Fukushima crisis that began with an earthquake and tsunami in March.It says that the government jumped the gun by signalling the go-ahead for eight new nuclear plants in June before the Mr Weightman reported his findings.Greenpeace has made a number of submissions to the inquiry regarding the time scale of the report and lack of transparency.

It also argues that the interim report did not provide proper information on radiation exposure and it said lessons could be learnt from Fukushima over spent nuclear fuel stores.And the group has launched a judicial review bid over the decision to give the new nuclear reactors the green light before the final report was published.Greenpeace spokeswoman Louise Hutchins said: "It's not really clear what Mr Weightman's final report is for. The government already jumped the gun and gave the green light to new reactors in Britain without bothering to wait for Mr Weightman's final conclusions on lessons from the Fukushima disaster. The rushed timetable set for this final report looks like a dangerous attempt by the government to cut corners and silence voices of concern, in order to keep pushing forward with its favoured technology."(Morning Star October 9 2011)
